GoHighLevel Review: A Developer's Honest Take

I've built websites, funnels and forms inside GoHighLevel for agencies and businesses. This isn't an affiliate review written from the sales page. It's what the platform is like to work in every day, and who I think should, and shouldn't, use it.

My take on GoHighLevel by area, from building in it for clients.

What GoHighLevel is

GoHighLevel (often just "HighLevel" or "GHL") is an all-in-one platform for marketing and sales: a CRM and pipelines, a website and funnel builder, forms and surveys, calendars, email and SMS, automation workflows, reputation management and more. Agencies can resell it under their own brand to clients through sub-accounts.

GoHighLevel pricing

PlanMonthlySub-accountsNotable extras
Starter$973Unlimited contacts and users
Unlimited$297UnlimitedRebilling at cost, basic API access
Agency Pro$497UnlimitedSaaS mode, automated sub-account creation, rebilling with markup, advanced API

Each plan has a 14-day free trial. Phone, email and AI usage are billed separately on top of the plan, so budget for them if you send a lot of SMS or calls.

What GoHighLevel does well

  • One login for the whole funnel. Page, form, calendar, pipeline and follow-up live in one place, so leads don't fall through the gaps between tools.

  • Workflows are genuinely powerful. Triggers, waits, conditions and actions cover most small-business follow-up without Zapier.

  • Agency friendly. Sub-accounts, snapshots and white-labelling make it easy to run many clients from one account.

  • Value when you replace several tools. If GHL replaces your CRM, email tool, scheduler and page builder, the price compares well.

Where it frustrates (from a developer's chair)

  • The builder is fast to start, slow to make distinctive. Making pages look truly custom often needs custom CSS and code.

  • Pages can get heavy. Stacking many elements, videos and scripts slows pages down. Test every funnel on PageSpeed Insights before you spend on ads.

  • So many features, so many settings. The learning curve is real, and a messy account becomes hard to manage quickly.

  • Usage costs add up. SMS, calls and AI features are metered, which is fair but easy to underestimate.

GoHighLevel vs ClickFunnels

ClickFunnels is built around funnels and selling products online. GoHighLevel is built around the whole customer journey: CRM, follow-up and automation, with funnels as one part. If you mainly sell products through funnels, ClickFunnels may feel simpler. If you sell services and need follow-up, booking and pipelines, GoHighLevel usually fits better. Compare current pricing on both sites, because both change.

Who should use GoHighLevel

  • Yes: marketing agencies, service businesses that book calls or appointments, and teams replacing three or more separate tools.

  • Maybe not: an ecommerce store that mainly needs a great storefront (Shopify does that better), or a business that only needs a simple website.

My verdict

GoHighLevel is excellent value when you use what you pay for, and a frustrating tangle when you don't. The platform isn't the hard part: setting it up cleanly is. If you'd like a GHL website or funnel that doesn't look like a template, that's what I build.
